Some Men Break. Some Men Bend. He Refused to Disappear.

Gray Man: Walking the Tightrope Between RIGHT and WRONG is the true memoir of Ron Haines — Vietnam veteran, self-made entrepreneur, software and encryption specialist, federal lawsuit survivor, father, and fighter.

At 19 years old, Ron was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Not asked.

Drafted.

After basic training at Fort Knox and infantry training at Fort Polk, he was shipped to Vinh Long, Vietnam, where he served with the 7/1 Air Cavalry as a Huey helicopter door gunner. Hanging out the side of a chopper, scanning the jungle below, finger near the trigger, he learned fast what fear was. He also learned something that would follow him for the rest of his life:

If he could survive that, he could survive almost anything.

And he would have to.

After Vietnam, Ron came home and got to work. He repaired televisions. Went self-employed. Built his own home by hand. Opened businesses. Took risks. Failed. Rebuilt. Kept moving.

From TV repair shops to video stores, from early computer systems to software development, from business ownership to corporate security and encryption, Ron built a life the hard way — one decision, one fight, one risk at a time.

Then came the pressure.

Corporate lawsuits. Federal courtrooms. FBI search warrants. Computers seized. Legal threats. Financial collapse. Three bankruptcies. Two divorces. The kind of government scrutiny and courtroom warfare that can flatten a man before he ever gets a chance to tell his side.

Ron chose to fight.

He represented himself in federal court. Pro Per. No big legal team. No polished machine behind him. Just grit, research, stubbornness, and the same refusal to quit that had carried him through Vietnam.

And he won.

But Gray Man is not only a war story. It is not only a business story. It is not only a legal story.

It is also the story of a father living through the deepest kind of grief. The story of love, failure, marriage, divorce, loyalty, loss, and the brutal private moments nobody sees from the outside.

This book does not pretend Ron was perfect.

That is the point.

Real life is rarely clean. It does not fit neatly into right or wrong, hero or villain, success or failure. Some lives are lived in the gray area — where survival has a cost, where every victory leaves scars, and where the truth is messier than the version people want to hear.

That is why this book is called Gray Man.

It is the story of a man who was knocked down by war, business, lawsuits, bankruptcy, betrayal, grief, and the federal government — and kept getting back up anyway.

No spin.

No polish.

No bullshit.

Just the truth, as best as he lived it.

Why Read Gray Man?

Because some memoirs are written from a safe distance.

This one is written from the wreckage.

Gray Man is for veterans, entrepreneurs, fighters, survivors, fathers, builders, risk-takers, and anyone who has ever had life put a boot on their throat and had to decide whether to stay down or get back up.

It is gritty, emotional, direct, sometimes brutal, sometimes funny, and always honest.

This is not a clean motivational slogan.

This is proof.

Proof that resilience is not a word you print on a poster.

It is what you do when the lawsuit hits. When the warrant comes. When the marriage ends. When the money is gone. When the phone rings with news you cannot survive, but somehow do.

Ron Haines survived the jungle when the jungle wanted him dead. He survived the courtroom when the system came knocking. He survived businesses that collapsed, marriages that ended, bankruptcies that should have buried him, and grief that no parent should have to carry.

And at 77, he is still here to tell the story.

That is not hope.

That is not luck.

That is proof.

  1. Rebecca W –

Reads like a hard-boiled detective novel. Funny and clever. The reader gets a great adventure without leaving their armchair!!

  2. Bob Beste –

I’ve known Ron Haines for over 40 years, and I can honestly say he is one of the most intelligent, determined, and resilient people I have ever met. We’ve shared some incredible adventures over the years, and I was surprised and delighted to recognize a few of them woven into the pages of this book.

What makes Gray Man so compelling is its authenticity. Ron doesn’t present himself as a flawless hero. Instead, he tells his story with honesty, humility, and a level of detail that pulls you into every chapter of his life. From the challenges of his early childhood to military service, entrepreneurship, personal loss, legal battles, and financial setbacks, he has faced more adversity than most people will encounter in a lifetime.

Yet the defining theme throughout the book is perseverance. No matter what life throws at Ron, he refuses to quit. He meets every obstacle head-on with courage, tenacity, and an unwavering determination to survive and move forward. Time and again, when lesser people might have given up, Ron found a way to rebuild, reinvent himself, and keep fighting.

Beyond being an extraordinary memoir, this book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. It’s inspiring, entertaining, emotional, and thought-provoking. Whether you know Ron personally or not, you’ll come away with a deep appreciation for a man who has lived life on his own terms and never stopped pushing forward.

If you enjoy true stories of resilience, grit, and triumph over adversity, Gray Man is a must-read. Five stars without hesitation.

  5. Rhea Diamond –

Amazing what one man can do and the woman standing behind him. Never give up is in each and every chapter.

  6. Jessica Rickard –

I am an avid reader and when I had an opportunity to read this book, I jumped at it. Bought a hard back copy and he kindly autographed it. That said, once I started it, I was thrilled to read about Ron’s wild life and ultimate success. Haines does such a good job making you feel that you’re with him in person as he narrates his incredible experiences. A very good writer has a knack for capturing the reader’s attention and allowing the reader to be oblivious to the world. I give Ron an A+

  7. Tracey Swanson –

Resilience. Tenacity. Courage. Strength. Perseverance. 100% authentic.

The author does a great job of hooking you in right away and keeping you engaged throughout his personal journey. Despite all the hard times, triumphs are a consistent theme. If this book can’t inspire you and strengthen your own resolve, I don’t know what can. A truly enjoyable and inspiring book.

  8. Jen Edson –

What an incredible novel! I wasn’t able to put the book down! Well written and an intriguing life!!

  9. R.T. –

Wide Range of Stories, Loved All of It!

Met Ron at a local event and purchased a copy of this book. I really enjoyed reading it, as he had a wide variety of stories to tell from his childhood, serving in the Vietnam War, building businesses, getting married, solving complex security problems, representing himself in lawsuits, etc. I am passing my copy along to my dad who I know will appreciate it as much as I did. Hope Ron writes and releases more books in the days to come!

I planned to spend one hour to start Gray Man and I couldn’t set the book down. I read for over two hours and was late for work. Thank you Ron Haines

  12. M.P. –

Very few have the true grit and tenacity as Ron Haines. Unreal what this man has gone through during the course of his life. Most humans would break and disappear down a deep rabbit hole. Ron’s mindset is truly amazing. An inspiration of a man’s ability, to get back up each time, after being dusted, and pressing forward with his strong beliefs to survive and succeed. A solid read of an amazing human. Definitely recommend this book. Thank you Ron for your service!

  13. David Cashion –

I very much enjoyed reading Gray Man and consider it a magnum opus. Ron Haines led an exceptionally bold and colorful existence, and the book kept my attention through all its phases, starting with spirited activities as a kid and bravery in the thick of the Vietnam War. But maybe one of the most impressive elements of Gray Man for me was the honesty with the book portraying all of the romantic relationships. What makes all of this go down exceptionally smoothly, though, is very solid writing. The author seems to be a natural storyteller and I could not stop reading.

  14. James Dearth –

I don’t write reviews very often, but this book stuck with me enough that I felt like I had to.
Gray Man isn’t your typical polished life story—it’s raw, blunt, and at times uncomfortable, but that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. You can tell right away this isn’t someone trying to impress you. It feels like you’re sitting across from a guy who’s just telling you exactly how it went down, no sugarcoating.
What really grabbed me was the range of his life. One minute you’re reading about wild childhood mistakes that actually taught him something, and the next you’re right there with him in Vietnam, feeling the tension, the fear, and the reality of what he went through. Those sections hit hard and don’t feel exaggerated—they feel lived.
The part that stuck with me the most was the story about his brother Joey. That whole situation didn’t get wrapped up neatly, and honestly, that made it feel more real. Life doesn’t always give you answers, and you can feel the weight of that carrying through the rest of the book.
Then you get into his later life—business, legal battles, dealing with the government—and it’s just as intense in a different way. Whether you agree with everything or not, you can’t deny the guy stood his ground and refused to be pushed around. That theme of resilience runs through the entire book.
What I appreciated most is that this isn’t a story about a perfect man—it’s about endurance. He messed up, took risks, paid for it, and kept going anyway. There’s something real about that.
If you’re looking for something clean and inspirational, this probably isn’t it. But if you want a true story that feels honest, gritty, and unapologetic, this one’s worth your time.
Definitely a 5-star read for me.

  15. Christina Nicole –

The author’s writing style creates vivid imagery, allowing readers to easily visualize the scenes unfolding on the page. I devoured this book in just a few hours, captivated by each tale that pays homage to its respective era. This collection feels like the inception of even greater stories waiting to be told.
